The living being comes into the material world, and in the material world, everyone is in a state of forgetfulness.
Every single person is influenced by some degree of ignorance. Those who are in the mode of ignorance, in tama-guna, they are grossly affected by ignorance. Those who are in raja-guna, a little less effected by ignorance. And those who are in sattva-guna, still a little less affected by ignorance.
But even those in sattva-guna, they are covered by ignorance.
It is said, just like a sleeping person going through terrible dreams, and one is chased, chased in the dream, and running and running…. and we wake up, and we’re still looking around and still want to run! It’s like:
“It was only a dream!”
“Yeah, I know but..!”
“Calm down!”
So currently, we have come to Krsna consciousness, we have woken up from the material dream, and yet still responding to it!
A person in the mode of passion is very much responding to the material world: “DID YOU SEE THAT? DID YOU SEE THAT!? DID YOU SEE THAT?!?”
It was either good or bad.
“Did you see that? That was wonderful!”
”Did you see that? Oh, that was terrible!”
…The mood is different. A person in the mode of ignorance, his understanding of what is good and bad would be just opposite to the actual fact. If it’s really rotten and foul, he would think, “Did you see that? That was really great!”
If it’s actually pure, he would say, “Oh God, that’s totally useless, you know.. That’s a waste of time!”
So in this way the living being, in the material world, is covered by ignorance.
