(HH Kadamba Kanana Swami, 6th March 2012, New York) Lecture: Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Adi-lila 17.200

Isvara Puri became the spiritual master of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. One could ask the question:

‘Since the Supreme Lord is not exactly as limited as we are in His choice for a spiritual master, so why didn’t Caitanya Mahaprabhu directly choose Madhavendra Puri?’

He could have made Madhavendra Puri appear a little later…. He could have just edited Isvara Puri out of the pastime and just been a direct disciple of Madhavendra Puri, no problem. But no He didn’t become the disciple of the great famous ācārya…………………………….the interesting part is that the qualification of Isvara Puri was that (not that he was not the famous ācārya) he was the humble servant.

That was his outstanding quality, since we recall that during the last days of Madhavendra Puri he was bedridden and actually paralysed! Such a devotee had to go through that suffering, but yet he was given service by Isvara Puri who with such a dedicated manner had cleansed his body even from stools and other things. Disease can be rough. He was the emblem of servitorship.

It was his incredible service attitude that qualified him to become the spiritual master of the Supreme Lord………………………………. So He is highlighting service attitude as a very important qualification!
