(Kadamba Kanana Swami, December 2014, Mayapur, India, Nectar of Devotion Seminar, Part 2a)
In the Srimad Bhagavatam (3.29.12-13), Srila Kapiladev, while instructing his mother, has given the following characteristics of pure devotional service, ‘My dear mother, those who are My pure devotees have no desire for material benefit or philosophical speculation, and have their mind so much engaged in my service that they are never interested in asking me for anything, except to be engaged in that service. They do not even beg to live in my abode with me.’ This verse is the foundation of pure devotional service for the followers of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, that they do not ask for anything else but to be engaged in the service of the Lord.
It is understandable because there is no one more wonderful than Krsna, therefore there is nothing better than serving Krsna! So what can we ask Krsna for!? In any worship of Krsna, if we ask for something else, that means we think that the other thing is better. We work for money, not because we love the work but because we love the money. So we love something else. We worship and ask for many benedictions: good health, wealth and all these things, because we care for these material things. Then with great devotion, we make our offerings but that is not pure. Pure motivation means we are asking for nothing in return but more devotional service.
